Frida Kahlo inspired today’s Google.com image, a tribute to what would be the painter’s 103rd birthday.
Kahlo, a Mexican painter born in Coyoacán, is known for her self-portraits and still lifes. Her unibrow and mustache are staple features in her self-representations, both memorable and striking.
After surviving polio at the age of fifteen, the artist began to paint. Seven years later, she married painter Diego Rivera, 20 years her senior. Their tumultuous relationship endured infidelities, divorce, and remarriage, but ultimately ended with Kahlo’s death.
Kahlo’s life and work still captivates attention, inspiring books by feminist art historians, art exhibits, paraphernalia, and a motion picture with Salma Hayek—Frida (2002). Despite her death in 1954, Kahlo’s signature unibrow lives on.
