Republican David R. Malpass is making it official. He will challenge New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
Malpass, a top economist, is making the announcement Wednesday in New York City.
He advised former Mayor Rudy Giuliani during his 2008 presidential campaign. He also worked in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and the first George Bush.
Republicans believe Gillibrand is vulnerable. The unelected senator was appointed by an unpopular governor and has been unable to significantly raise her approval ratings.
Former Nassau County Legislator Bruce Blakeman and former Westchester County congressman Joe DioGuardi have also announced they’re seeking the Republican nomination in the Sept. 14 primary election.
