Ex-L.I. Pol to Seek GOP Nod for US Senate

A former Long Island politician is set to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

Bruce Blakeman, a former presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature, told The Associated Press on Thursday that he will formally announce his candidacy at a rally Sunday in his home town of Valley Stream.

Blakeman, who is also a former Port Authority commissioner, outlined a conservative Republican agenda. He cites displeasure over the rising deficit, health care reform and the bailouts of the banking and automobile industry.

He previously ran statewide, losing to comptroller H. Carl McCall in 1998.

Blakeman’s ex-wife is Nancy Shevell, a MTA board member now romantically linked to Paul McCartney
