You’ve probably heard of a beached whale. But what about a beached plane?
A pilot safely landed his small plane on Fire Island beach on Sunday morning after he lost engine power. Providence, R.I.-based pilot Paul Santopietro and his two passengers were unhurt.
Santopietro says that the three were traveling from Rhode Island to Virginia to look at a plane that was for sale. He says that he was flying over Great South Bay when the engine quit. He decided to land at Fire Island because he saw a long stretch of empty beach on the island, about 53 miles southeast of New York City. He says he called 911.
The Federal Aviation Administration says it is investigating the accident.
