A bicyclist was fatally struck by an eastbound Long Island Rail Road train in New Cassel on Tuesday afternoon about two hours after another biker was wounded in a nearby car crash.
An LIRR spokeswoman said a Huntington-bound train with 200 passengers aboard hit and killed the bicyclist at the Urban Avenue crossing at 1:25 p.m. The unidentified victim, who was described as in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Nassau County police spokeswoman said another bicyclist was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle at around 11 a.m. five miles away at the corner of South Broadway at Lauman Avenue in Hicksville.
The roadway was temporarily closed while investigators were on the scene. LIRR service was temporarily suspended between the Mineola and Hicksville stations for the same reason.
The train’s engineer told MTA Police that the crossing gates were down when the bicyclist was struck. The spokeswoman said resulting LIRR delays are not expected to last into the evening rush hour commute.
