The Suffolk County SPCA is asking for donations to pay for surgery to fix the broken leg of an emaciated dog that was found abandoned in a yard in Bellport last week.
The one-year-old female mix-breed named Midnight was taken Wednesday to the Bayport Village Animal Health Center, where veterinarians determined that she will need expensive surgery to repair the fractured femur.
“This is a very sweet dog and we will do everything we can to see that she gets the proper treatment,” Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk SPCA, said.
The dog was also found to be underweight, infested with fleas and suffering from at least two forms of internal parasites. She must gain weight before surgery can be performed. Joint problems were also found in addition to issues with one of her knees.
The vet who will be performing the surgery found that the dog’s injuries were caused by blunt force trauma, according to the Suffolk SPCA.
