Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman appeared on Fox News Wednesday night and stated that he doesn’t regret anything that happened the night he shot unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin because it was all part of “God’s plan.”
Zimmerman also told host Sean Hannity that he prays for Martin’s parents daily, and would like to talk to them about the fateful February night.
“I am sorry that they buried their child,” he said. “I can’t imagine what it must feel like.”
Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting 17-year-old Martin as he was walking home from a convenience store unarmed on Feb. 26. The incident had many up in arms because Zimmerman was not arrested until weeks after the shooting, and also sparked debate over whether he shot Martin because he was black.
The 28-year-old, is currently free on bond, has claimed that he acted in self-defense, and said that Martin attacked him as he was walking back to his truck. He told Hannity that Martin started bashing his head into the concrete, and said “you’re going to die tonight.”
To the claims that he only followed Martin because he was black, Zimmerman, who is half-Hispanic, insisted, “I am not a racist.”
Long Islanders react to Zimmerman’s arrest.
Martin’s parents went on television Thursday morning to say that they did not agree with Zimmerman’s assertion that their son’s death was part of God’s plan.
“We must worship a different God,” Trayvon’s father Tracy Martin said. “There is no way that my God wanted George Zimmerman to murder my teenage son.”
Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, struck down the idea of meeting with Zimmerman.
“Absolutely not,” she told the “Today” show.
