An Old Brookville woman is facing an endangering the welfare of a child charge after she was arrested for leaving her 1-year-old daughter in her car for 15 minutes on one of the hottest days of the year, Suffolk County police said.
Police responded to a 911 call of a small child in a Mercedes Benz parked in the Big H Shopping Center in Huntington, police said. When they arrived, officers found the girl “profusely sweating” while she was sitting in the unlocked car, which was parked in direct sunlight, police said. The engine was off and the windows were slightly open, police said. Officers took the girl out of the car and placed her in air-conditioning.
The girl’s mother, Aimee Rachlin, 26, was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child. Mother and daughter were taken to the 2nd precinct, where the girl was given fruit and water, police said. She was not injured.
Rachlin was released on bail, and the child remained with the mother, police said.
Child Protective Services was notified, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
