A Rocky Point man was arrested for drunken driving with his 2-year-old child after Southampton Town Police said he crashed his car, causing it to go airborne.
Timothy J. Shaw was speeding in his Subaru Forrester eastbound on Montauk Highway in Speonk when he skidded off the roadway, struck an embankment and went airborne at 7:31 p.m. Thursday, police said.
The car flew over a four-foot fence, struck a utility pole head on before coming to rest in the back yard of a residence, police said. The pole snapped by the impact.
Neither the 34-year-old man nor the child was injured, but the toddler was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for observation.
Shaw was charged with driving while intoxicated with a child less than 16 years of age in the vehicle, a felony under Leandra’s Law. He was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, open alcohol in a motor vehicle and several traffic violations.
Police said he had a prior DWI conviction in the past 10 years.
The vehicle was impounded and Child Protective Services was notified. Shaw will be arraigned Friday at Southampton Town Justice Court.
