A fiery crash on the Long Island Expressway involving at least 25 vehicles left one person dead and more than 30 injured in Yaphank Wednesday afternoon, Suffolk County Police said.
Initial reports said that at around 2:38 p.m. a tractor trailer traveling eastbound on the LIE just west of the William Floyd Parkway struck multiple vehicles. Police stated that the official cause of the crash is still under investigation, along with the exact number of vehicles involved.
The accident left one person dead and 32 injured, two seriously. The victims were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center and Stony Brook University Hospital. Five fire departments and 19 EMS agencies responded to the scene.
The LIE was closed in both directions after the accident from exit 67 to exit 69. Police said that the eastbound lanes will be closed the entire night, and there is no time frame yet on when the westbound lanes will open.
