The Nassau County police officer struck by a car in Lawrence remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police said the 57-year-old officer was hit by an Audi while performing a traffic stop on Nassau Expressway just north of the Atlantic Avenue Bridge at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday.
He was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment of a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, fractured right leg and massive internal bleeding.
The Audi was driven by a 43-year-old man who stopped at the scene. A 9-year-old boy and a 20-year-old woman were passengers in the car. They were not injured.
The driver was not arrested. Detectives impounded the Audi for a safety inspection while the investigation continues.
The expressway was closed for about six hours in both directions.
