Mastic Man Charged With Fatal Hit-and-run

Preston Mimms

Suffolk County authorities have apprehended a suspect wanted for a hit-and-run crash that killed a 24-year-old mother in Mastic last summer.

Preston Mimms was arrested on a grand jury indictment warrant charging him with leaving the scene of an incident involving death. He pleaded not guilty Monday before Judge Gary Weber.

Prosecutors said the 47-year-old Mastic man fatally struck Erika Hughes of Shirley while she was walking on Mastic Road around midnight on July 29, 2011.

The suspect allegedly fled without stopping. Hughes was left to die in the street.

Bail for Mimms was set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond.
