A suspect has been charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of a 21-year-old college student in Brentwood last weekend, Suffolk County prosecutors said.
Craig Brackley Perkins was accompanied by his attorney when he turned himself in to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, authorities said.
The 53-year-old Ronkonkoma man pleaded not guilty Thursday at First District Court to leaving the scene of an incident without reporting.
Perkins allegedly struck and killed Kieran Smith of Kings Park on the eastbound Long Island Expressway service road, where the victim’s car had become disabled Sunday morning, authorities said.
His body was discovered on the shoulder of the service road by a passing driver. Prosecutors said Perkins admitted his involvement in the crash.
Perkins is cooperating in the investigation and his Ford pickup truck is being inspected by analysts at the Suffolk County Crime Lab, prosecutors said.
Suffolk County Judge Patricia Filiberto set bail for Perkins at $5,000. He is due back in court on May 16.
