An East Setauket man has been arrested for drunken driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway in Sayville shortly after midnight Friday.
This is the third wrong-way incident believed to involve alcohol on Long Island in recent weeks.
Ralph Cerullo was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, reckless driving and unlawfully fleeing police.
Suffolk County sheriff’s deputies estimate the 54-year-old man went about 10 miles at a high rate of speed westbound in the eastbound lanes in his Infiniti before being stopped. He had swerved around patrol cars and struck a guardrail, authorities said.
Two drivers were injured last month in a wrong-way car crash on the Long Island Expressway. One day earlier, an off-duty New York City police officer was killed in a wrong-way crash on the Northern State Parkway. Both crashes also allegedly involved drunken driving.
Cerullo pleaded not guilty Friday and his bail was set at $50,000.
