The Bad Plus are a jazz trio, but you’d probably get some unflattering looks from jazz aficionados if you tried name-dropping the band: They don’t have a trumpet player. They recorded an entire album with a vocalist. And their list of covers is one of the most encompassing in all of music, including Nirvana, Radiohead, Queen, The Flaming Lips, David Bowie, Yes, Aphex Twin, Rush, Pixies, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Interpol and Wilco. Call them avant-garde if you need to classify their sound or call them treasonous imitators if you live and die by Kind of Blue.
