Since emerging at the dawn of the ’90s, Scotland’s Teenage Fanclub have been associated with countless different scenes: C86, grunge, Britpop, twee, indie rock, Mojo-celebrated retro rock, earnest Scot anthemry…but none of those labels has ever managed to define or capture what it is that makes Teenage Fanclub such a special group. Part of that comes from the band’s amazing partnership: Singing and songwriting duties are split evenly between three incredibly talented musicians—Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love—each of whom brings a distinct tone that also blends perfectly with the voices that surround it. Surely, too, each of those artists challenges the others to up their games, which has led to a long and flawless career that has spanned some two decades and has only gotten stronger and more impressive (as evidenced by this year’s gorgeous Shadows). Fanclub play the States infrequently, so to miss them while they’re here would be an error—any chance to hear those blissful harmonies in person is one that should not be missed.
