A 23-year-old man suffered serious injuries after he jumped out of his second-story apartment window to escape a fire in Long Beach on Saturday.
Long Beach Fire Department firefighters responded to the fire on West Market Street that started when the victim had fallen asleep in his bedroom after placing a frying pan with oil onto the stove at 6:20 p.m.
The man then awoke to a fire in his apartment and jumped out of a second story window, Nassau County police said. He was home alone at the time of the fire.
The victim, who suffered second-degree burns on his back and abrasions on his face and head from broken glass, was taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
Firefighters extinguished the flames. Arson/Bomb Squad detectives deemed the fire accidental.
