Nothing makes the engineers working in Stuttgart, Germany happier than putting one of Porsche’s vehicles on a strict diet. At the 2010 New York International Auto Show, that practice resulted in the new Cayenne S Hybrid, which adds an electric motor and sheds 400 pounds.

The 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid utilizes a 333-horsepower gasoline engine and a 37-horsepower electric motor for a total of 380 ponies. The combination results in typical Porsche performance and improved gas mileage—the SUV gets 20 percent better fuel economy than the new standard Cayenne, which itself is a 20 percent increase over its predecessor.
The entire line of Cayennes receive the massive weight reduction in addition to styling cues that bring it in line with the current range of Porsches. Those include Carrera GT-inspired headlights, subtle LED-light strips and vented air intakes up front, and the iconic “hips” around back.
Both V8 variants will be on dealer lots in July, while the V6 Cayenne and Cayenne S Hybrid will hit showrooms in the fall. The hybrid variant with carry a sticker price north of the base Cayenne’s $46,700 and S’s $63,700, going for $67,700. The only Porsche SUV costing more will be the Turbo, at *gulp* $104,800.
