An American-born Long Islander has been charged with receiving training from al-Qaida and providing the terrorist organization with information about the New York City transit system.
Court papers unsealed Wednesday in New York federal court identified the defendant as Bryant Neal Vinas, a former Patchogue resident, who was believed to be cooperating in a terrorism case in Europe.
Vinas’ identity had been kept secret since his indictment late last year, and federal prosecutors refused to discuss the case on Wednesday.
But a defense attorney in the European case said that Vinas had provided evidence to prosecutors there.
Vinas’ attorney didn’t immediately respond to a telephone message left Wednesday.
