When Arthur Gianelli gave his State of the Hospital address a few weeks ago, he spoke of a “lofty ideal:” that everyone receive not adequate, but exceptional, medical care. Just a few years ago, this ideal didn’t merely seem lofty, it seemed impossible, unattainable—maybe even crazy talk for a hospital on the brink of financial collapse. But in his five years at the helm, Gianelli has taken NuHealth Systems from the gutter to the top tier. With a state-of-the-art emergency room, nationally ranked Stroke Center and a program for uninsured patients, Gianelli has not only crossed financial success and cutting-edge technology off his to-do list, he has gone the extra step to make this technology accessible to Long Island’s most vulnerable populations. By the end of 2011, he’ll open a new Eye Center and finish renovations of major units. NUMC will become one of a handful of facilities to offer 3-D tomosynthesis, the most powerful imaging technology in the country. But what makes Gianelli really powerful is his ability to make ideals, no matter how lofty, a reality.
