Apple Press Conference: Apple to Offer iPhone 4 Refunds, Free Cases

by Brad Pareso on July 16, 2010

UPDATE: Apple has posted video of the press conference.

Not happy with your iPhone 4?  Return it.

That’s Apple’s stance on its new phone, and after a large signal issue being dubbed “Antennagate,” the company is appeasing the angry by offering a full refund for any iPhone 4 buyer who purchased the device in the first 30 days since its launch.

Like your iPhone 4, but want improved reception? Apple will also be giving out free cases to all iPhone owners, beginning next Friday.

The iPhone 4 has an antenna issue. Perhaps you’ve heard about it? Consumer Reports made the issue big news when it failed to recommend the phone, despite topping the outlet’s list of smartphones, because the exposed antenna bridge on the lower left side of the phone, when bridged by a finger, caused signal to dramatically decrease.

With two days notice, Apple called a press conference to address the reports. Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage in Cupertino to discuss the issue.

Jobs also offered some stats pertaining to the iPhone 4:

  • More than 3 million iPhone 4s have been sold in the three weeks since the device launched.
  • Other smartphones—the BlackBerry Bold, HTC Droid Eris, Samsung Omnia II—drop bars when held in a similar fashion.
  • According to the company’s AppleCare support data, only .55% of iPhone 4 owners have called to complain about their phone’s signal strength.
  • According to AT&T, the iPhone 4’s return rate is 1.7%, or one-third of the 3GS
  • The iPhone 4 has one more dropped call per 100 calls than the 3GS
