Medical officials at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute upstate want students to close the tap on drinking games to prevent the spread of swine flu. Officials says several cases of the H1N1 infection have been linked to sharing cups during games such as beer pong.

New York’s top court is set to hear arguments against providing government benefits to same sex couples married in Canada or other jurisdictions where such marriages are legal.

With a familiar high-pitched voice counting off one-two-three-four, “This Is It,” a new Michael Jackson single debuted online Monday, prompting a hasty response from the singer’s estate after Paul Anka revealed he was the song’s co-writer. Jackson’s estate promised Anka 50 percent of the song’s profits.

ABC has given a full-season pickup to “FlashForward,” “Modern Family,” “The Middle” and “Cougar Town.” The “FlashForward” premiere was the first regular scripted series since “Friends” to beat CBS’ “Survivor” in its time slot.

Bob Barker, Shaquille O’Neal, Ozzy Osbourne, Al Sharpton and Cedric the Entertainer aren’t who you’d expect to see when turning on World Wrestling Entertainment programming. OK, maybe Ozzy. All are featured guests this fall with the WWE as Vince McMahon’s machine undergoes some image polishing and stresses a family friendly approach. They’ve toned down the language, gotten rid of the fake blood and the lingerie matches.

NBC Universal confirms that Lauren Graham has joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming series “Parenthood.” Graham, best known from the long-running “Gilmore Girls,” joins the cast as a replacement for Maura Tierney, who was forced to drop out of the series this summer after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

A warship built with 7½ tons of steel from the World Trade Center site is heading to its namesake city. The USS New York left south Louisiana, where it was built, on Tuesday. The Navy will officially commission it in New York in early November.

Owners of Sidekick phones may have lost all the personal information they put on the device, because of server failure. T-Mobile gave customers a $20 refund to cover the cost of one month of data usage on the phone. It also will give certain customers with a “significant and permanent” loss of personal data a $100 customer appreciation card. T-Mobile said it will contact those customers in the next 14 days.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed an anti-paparazzi bill making it easier to sue media outlets that use photos that invade celebrities’ privacy.
