Zachary Parker, the burglar at the center of an alleged Nassau County police cover-up, is facing new charges after a car crash early Friday morning, authorities said.
The 20-year-old Merrick man was ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and unlicensed operation of a vehicle, according to Nassau County prosecutors.
Parker crashed a car into a stop sign near Broadway Mall in Hicksville at 12:30 a.m. Friday, said Chris Munzing, a spokesman for District Attorney Kathleen Rice.
Parker appeared Friday before Judge John Kase, who ordered him remanded at Nassau County jail.
He is due to appear in Drug Diversion court Aug. 15 after pleading guilty last month to driving while impaired by drugs and possession of marijuana and ketamine, a tranquilizer following an Oct. 5, 2011 arrest. He faces a sentence of up to 1 1/3 to 4 years in that case.
Earlier this year, he was sentenced to five years’ probation after pleading guilty to burglarizing electronics John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore in 2009—a break-in that three ex-Nassau police commanders allegedly covered up.
Prosecutors have said the ex-cops tried to squash the investigation as a favor to Parker’s father, who was a donor to a nonprofit fundraising for a new police academy.
Ex-Nassau County Police Second Deputy Commissioner William Flanagan, former Deputy Chief Inspector John Hunter and retired Detective Sergeant Al Sharpe have all pleaded not guilty to official misconduct and conspiracy in that case.
Parker is scheduled to face the latest charges Sept. 14. His Mineola-based attorney, Marc Gann, was not immediately available for comment.
