Madison Square Garden can add another bit to it’s “World’s Most Famous Arena” tagline: “Place Everybody on Earth Wishes They Were Oct. 20, 2010”
Because after delivering what is unquestionably one of the best live shows touring right now, Phoenix started playing “If I Ever Feel Better,” only to be interrupted BY F*CKING DAFT PUNK! It all went down at Phoenix’s performance at Madison Square Garden last night, as part of the CMJ Music Marathon. Perhaps you weren’t there; perhaps you were at Santos Party House enjoying the great one-man show of Diamond Rings or the midnight performance from Wild Nothing. That’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of, but yeah, you missed Phoenix and Daft Punk.
The titans of electronic music and purveyors of robot chic appeared behind some 41st century equipment and proceeded to play “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” The duo then segued into “Around The World.” And for a grand finale, everyone got together for the greatest rendition of “1901” in history.
Besides being the greatest joint-performance in the history of history, it’s also a reuniting of sorts: Before either band existed, Daft Punk’s twosome of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were in a band called Darlin’ with Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. The French trio split up in the early ’90s and went on to make two of the best bands EVER.
As one YouTube commenter points out, the groups being French, yesterday’s show has a date of 20/10/2010. In other words, we all should have seen this coming.
