The organization for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (www.nbcam.org) is a year long non-profit that educates, hosts events, and raises funds for research and services.
NBCAM was founded in 1974, the same year that former first lady Betty Ford (a breast cancer survivor) had her mastectomy and began bringing wider attention to the disease and the ways to stop it early.
The New York Race for the Cure officially happened back in September, but fund raising continues through the end of the month and donations are still accepted. Some other interesting events and activities this month include Pink for October (an organization that encourages blogs/websites to use a pink background for the month), and an intriguing charity website called “Boobie-Thon”, wherein homemade breast photos raise money for Breast Cancer Research. On Long Island, at Good Times Tattoo Studio in East Islip and Horifudo Tattoo Studio in Smithtown, anyone can get a a Pink Ribbon tattoo for free, writing their check instead to Breast Cancer Help, Inc. Countless other events are happening all over, with calendars available at www.nbcam.org and www.breastcancerhelpinc.org.
