by Timothy Bolger on December 31, 2012

Authorities are looking for the hit-and-run driver who struck a 50-year-old pedestrian and left him for dead in Riverhead over the weekend.

Riverhead Town Police said Scott Wayte of Brookhaven was hit near the corner of Union Avenue and was then hit by a Honda Pilot at 5:40 p.m.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second driver, 53-year-old Ernest Austin of Pennsylvania, continued driving briefly after not realizing he had struck someone right away, police said.

Austin was not charged.

Investigators ask that anyone who witnessed the initial hit-and-run crash call them at 631-727-4500.
