Nassau County police brass and local lawmakers will hold a ceremony to rename a Long Island Expressway bridge for a highway patrolman killed nearby during a traffic stop earlier this year.
The Glen Cove Road overpass will be dedicated on Tuesday evening as the “Police Officer Michael J. Califano Memorial Bridge.”
Califano was seated in his patrol car after pulling a truck over on Feb. 4 when his car was struck from behind by a truck driver who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. The case against the driver is pending.
State Sen. Charles Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assem. Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck) authored the bridge renaming bill, which was signed into law in August.
The ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday inside police headquarters in Mineola.
Califano was killed about a month before an MTA Police officer fatally shot Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf, a member of the Bureau of Special Operations, during a moment of confusion outside of a Massapequa Park crime scene.
