Ben & Jerry’s has released a new flavor based off of a classic “Saturday Night Live” skit–“Schweddy Balls.”
The not-so-appetizing name comes from the famous SNL skit by Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon that features actor and Long Island native Alec Baldwin. Baldwin plays bakery owner Pete Schweddy, who is a guest on Gasteyer and Shannon’s NPR show “Delicious Dish.”
Schweddy’s special holiday treats are, of course, called “Schweddy Balls.”
“For a long time, I thought that ‘Here Lies Pete Schweddy’ would end up on my tombstone. Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry’s, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won’t go with me to the great beyond,” Baldwin said in a press release. “It is immortalized here, right now, and it’s an ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s and Schweddy. Two great names in American dessert, together at last.”
The ice cream company has always been creative when it comes to flavors. Spokesman Sean Greenwood said Ben & Jerry’s isn’t worried about offending people with “Schweddy Balls,” and that doing fun things is one of its principles. Other fun flavor names include Karamel Sutra, Phish Food, Fossil Fuel and Half Baked.
Timing is everything, and the newest limited-batch flavor will be released on September 24–the same night as the 37th season premiere of SNL, which Baldwin will be hosting. It will be available at both ice cream parlors and supermarkets.
So the most important question: What does “Schweddy Balls” taste like? The company said it consists of vanilla ice cream, rum, fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls.
