Friday will be a big day for coffee lovers.
Starbucks announced they will serve free coffee or tea to anyone who brings in a travel mug on Friday in celebration of Earth Day.
“We recognize the impact one can make through careful, conscious choices,” the Starbucks website says. “So we want to encourage and reward those of you who use tumblers or travel mugs in your daily routines. You’re helping to reduce our environmental impact!”
As for those who don’t own a reusable mug, Starbucks is offering 20 percent off mugs they sell in stores. Customers of the Seattle-born coffee shop can bring their travel mug in every day throughout the year and get 10 cents off their purchase, the website says.
Last year, Starbucks had a similar Earth Day promotion that saw more than 1.2 million participants come in with travel mugs.
“Although reusable serveware and tumbler use still only accounts for a small percentage of total beverages served, those of you who did bring in reusable mugs still made a significant impact,” says the website. “In 2010, people brought their own tumblers into our stores more than 32 million times, keeping nearly 1.45 million pounds of paper out of landfills.”
