Reports: Deron Willams Traded to the Nets

by Rashed Mian on February 23, 2011

The New Jersey Nets didn’t get Carmelo Anthony, but in a surprising move, the Nets are close to acquiring Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams.

After months of negotiations with the Denver Nuggets that didn’t amount to anything, it looked like the Nets weren’t going to drastically improve their team, but if reports are correct, and the Nets acquire Williams, this will be the first step in the process of creating a respectable team as they move to Brooklyn.

ESPN is reporting that Nets and Jazz have agreed to a blockbuster trade that would send rookie Derrick Favors and point guard Devin Harris to the Jazz for the All-Star point guard.

It’s clear that ever since the Nets’ new owner Mikhail Prokhorov purchased the team that he would try to add a star to his team before the move to Brooklyn.

Last season it started with an attempt to bring Lebron James to the Nets, but that failed, as James joined Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.

After Jazz coach Jerry Sloan abruptly retired after 23 years of coaching the team, it was reported that Deron Williams may have played a role in Sloan’s retirement.

It’s not clear if Williams was traded because of the controversy surrounding Sloan or if the team really didn’t think they would be able to hold on to Willams since he was eligible to become a free agent after next season.
