Rep. Christopher (R-N.Y.) Lee resigned his post after a report came out that the congressman tried to meet a woman on Craigslist.
Lee, who is married and has a son apologized in a statement on his website.
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”
Lee resigned after the gossip website, Gawker, published a picture of Lee shirtless with a cell phone in hand, apparently using a mirror to take the picture of himself.
“The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately,” Lee said in the statement.
Lee was serving his second term in New York’s 26th congressional district in Western New York.
