Rent the Runway

by Danielle Odiamar on January 5, 2011

Ladies – how many dresses do you have hanging in your closet that you have only (and will only) use once? More importantly how many more occasions this year are you going to need another great outfit? From black-tie-affairs, to a girls night out, dates, parties, weddings, prom as well as every holiday, New Year and birthday down the road, you are going to want to look good – for just as good, if not better, price. Needless to say we would all love to wear the current, great designs we see on runway shows and in magazines without the devastating prices, but… oh wait, you can.

Operating since November 2009, Rent the Runway is an affordable and easy way to wear expensive, high-end designer dresses, jewelery and accessories from the current season’s top collections. Designers include some fashion and Hollywood favorites like Halston, D&G, Chloe, Herve Leger, Badgley Mishka, Proenza Schhuler and many more.

Dresses can be rented for alarmingly low prices up to 90% off their retail prices – that’s hundreds of dollars off. These well-known, quality designs from over 95 different fashion brands can be rented for as low as $50 dollars – much less than the cost of purchasing another, minor brand-name outfit at a department store.

If that isn’t good enough RTR is incredibly easy to use. After registering with the website for free you may browse dresses, jewelery and accessories by price, style, size, occasion, or designer. You can also see the site’s newest styles, most popular items, stylist’s picks, best bets and items only available that weekend. If you’re having trouble deciding on a look you can even speak with a stylist via e-mail or on the phone. Once you’ve found what you’d like there is a custom check out box which enables you to enter the date of your next event, your size and your zip code. The website advises that you rent the dress 1-2 days before the event and encourage users to request a backup size to ensure proper fit for absolutely no cost. You can also rent a backup fashions for only $25 more. Once you receive your dress you have it for 4 days but  you can also rent it for 8 days instead for a rather expensive fee. When the event is finished just return the dress or accessory  in a prepaid envelope.

Renting dresses is simply a better alternative to dresses, as most dresses worn for special occasions are only worn once and are very expensive. It’s also a sensible way to lessen the impact on resources used in producing merchandise. RTR is a convenient way to do all of the above while expanding your wardrobe without the price.

Wedding & Event FAQ
Q- Does the flower girl have to wear white or ivory to match the bride?

A-Your flower girl can wear any colored dress, which of course coordinates with the rest of your wedding party. If you choose for her to wear white or ivory, you can accent the dress with the bridal party color sash or appliqué. She can also wear the color of the bridal party and to differentiate her, you can add a white or ivory sash. Choose something that you feel will coordinate best with the rest of your bridal party.
