November 12 marks the ninth anniversary the American Airlines Flight 587 plane crash on a Rockaway residential street.
Flight 587 crashed on a Monday morning onto the streets of Belle Harbor, killing five on the ground and all 265 people aboard the plane.
An engine from Flight 587 fell onto a gas station, just missing the gasoline pumps and an oil truck that would have exploded in the impact.
The plane was torn apart in the sky, with the tail landing in Jamaica Bay and the engines were scattered among a three block span.
After the crash a five block area was shut down between Newport Avenue and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
Nearly 50 residents of the area, including police and firefighters were hospitalized for smoke-related injuries. In all, 270 people were killed in the crash.
