Interview: Sam Rockwell

by Prairie Miller on October 23, 2010

Q: What about that amazing bond you share with Hilary in the movie, as sister and brother?

SR: You know, I was once cut out of a movie. It was a war film called Men of War. I had done some research for that film, and I likened Kenny’s relationship to Betty Anne’s as soldiers at war. They had been through this thing together and they would jump on a hand grenade for each other. I think with their childhood, they went through such hard times that they were inseparable, just like that bond soldiers have.

Q: That scene in the bar where you get into a fight and then you strip and goof around, was that your idea?

SR: Well, I had them play James Brown. I did a lot of fancy dancing! Thank God it got cut, because it just wasn’t too realistic.

Q: How do you feel about frontal nudity?

SR: Men or women?

Q: Well, you.

SR: I’m not a fan of it. If it shrivels up, then I’m not a fan. I’ve had to do frontal nudity after diving into cold water, so no, I’m not a big fan of it! I’ve done it because I felt it said something about the character. It shows something about their freedom and who they are as people, so it’s relevant to the film. But if it’s not, then it’s just gratuitous. Like when I was in The Green Mile, I showed my ass. I very carefully asked the makeup artist if she would help paint zits on my ass, because that was described in the book.  But sometimes it’s the opposite, where your vanity comes into play. You know, where you want your ass to be tan!

Q: While we’re on the subject of exposure, is fame and the intruding paparazzi something that bugs you?

SR: It’s cool, I’m fine with that. I get recognized plenty, and I’m happy with the level it’s at right now. I don’t need it to be any more. I’ve been on the cover of magazines, and it gets old. Stars like Brad Pitt, he’s got his hands full. He can’t go anywhere. I don’t know how the f*ck they do it. But they seem to be normal people. I couldn’t be like that. I’m grouchy! I’ve seen more famous people, how hard it is for them, and it’s no picnic. I just want the good parts, and I want to make a living. I’ve done all that.

Q: Did you have any anxiety going into the movie about playing someone who is still alive? HS: The idea of playing a real-life person has a lot of responsibility that comes with that. I would hate to have been a part of telling a story that Betty Anne and [...]

Wedding & Event FAQ
Q- Does the flower girl have to wear white or ivory to match the bride?

A-Your flower girl can wear any colored dress, which of course coordinates with the rest of your wedding party. If you choose for her to wear white or ivory, you can accent the dress with the bridal party color sash or appliqué. She can also wear the color of the bridal party and to differentiate her, you can add a white or ivory sash. Choose something that you feel will coordinate best with the rest of your bridal party.
