Dean Wareham Plays Galaxie 500 @ Bowery Ballroom
6 Delancey St. 212-533-2111. $15. 7 p.m.
with Crocodiles, Wakey! Wakey!, Brian Bonz and The Major Crimes, James Vincent McMorrow and Young Buffalo
The legendary Galaxie 500 is the band that made Dean Wareham famous—to the extent Dean Wareham can be considered famous—but he’s kept admirably busy ever since disbanding that act in 1991. He fronted Luna—responsible for some pretty terrific music of their own—and after that, Dean & Britta, who may not have any classics in their catalog, but don’t exactly suck, either. Still, Wareham is kind of doomed to always be initially associated with Galaxie…so why not embrace that fate? Not exactly a reunion—as Wareham and Galaxie rhythm section Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang still harbor plenty of bad blood—Wareham is nonetheless trotting out the classics that helped to shape entire genres, from slowcore to dream pop to shoegaze to indie rock itself.
