Toyota Motor Corp. announced Thursday that it is recalling 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models of their vehicles for brake fluid and fuel pump problems.

The car maker is recalling 740,000 cars in the U.S, 599,000 in Japan and the remainder in Europe and other parts of the world. In some intances there is a problem with the brake master cylinder, spokesman Paul Nolasco said. This can lead to weaker braking. In other models there is an electrical problem with the fuel pump, which could stall the engine. No accidents have been reported from these defects.

The models affected in the U.S include the 2004 through 2006 non-hybrid Highlander and Lexus RX330, the 2005 and 2006 Avalon and the 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 models. The company said it will notify owners by mail and the repairs will be free of charge.

Toyota has recalled more than 10 million automobiles worldwide over the part year, for a multitude of problems.
