Wineries and Beer Gardens on Long Island

by Long Island Press on October 7, 2010

Fall on Long Island is a time for enjoying the spirits: Every autumn, thousand flock out east to our vineyards to enjoy the best of what LI’s harvest has to offer. For those who prefer a hoppier beverage, there are many beer gardens, bars and beer tastings. Whatever your pleasure, autumn is the time to imbibe.

Plattduetsche Park Restaurant

1132 Hempstead Tpke. Franklin Square. 516-354-3131.

Plattdeutsche Park Restaurant of Franklin Square is another popular German restaurant with a Biergarten. There is a special Biergarten menu for those who come to eat and drink in this relaxing setting. You can munch on homemade German potato salad, buffalo wings or bratwurst on a bun. Pair those eats with a choice of Spaten Lager, Franziskaner Hefeweiss or Warsteiner and you’ve got the taste of Germany right in front of you!

Plattdeutsche Park Restaurant also hosts many exciting events for Long Islanders. You can stop off at their Beer Tasting Festival on Oct. 9, where you’ll have the chance to taste some flavorful beers and chow down on awesome German food.

Black Forest Brew Haus

2015 New Hwy. Farmingdale. 631-391-9500.

Some folks like wine; while others… they enjoy beer. Beer gardens, also known as Biergartens in Germany, are very popular on Long Island. You can find them at restaurants. It’s a great experience where you can taste all types of beer in a relaxing setting.

Black Forest Brew Haus of Farmingdale is the perfect spot for unusual food and beer. The restaurant has a beer garden where you can enjoy appetizers such as spinach artichoke dip and delicious German sliders with sliced bratwurst. For dinner, why not try Bacon-Wrapped Filet Mignon? It’s a tender cut of beef wrapped in bacon served on a potato pancake with asparagus. You can pair your meal with any of the Black Forest signature beers: Black Forest Pilsner, Black Forest Schwarzbier, Black Forest Brown Ale, Black Forest Hefe-weizen and Black Forest Amber. You can also take your beer home in a growler!

Black Forest Brew Haus will host Oktoberfest, featuring signature beer, food and music, on Oct. 8, 9 and 10.

John Harvard’s Brew House

2093 Smithaven Plaza, Lake Grove. 631-979-2739.

For all of you beer lovers out there, John Harvard’s Brew House of Lake Grove is the place to be for honest food and real beer! Munch on some pan-seared wings, savor some fresh lobster bisque or feast on their famous pulled pork sliders. While you’re there, you’ll want to give their beer selection a try. There’s the Silver Medal 2000 Real Ale Festival Pale Ale, which is very popular. The All-American Light Lager is full of taste and light on calories. Perhaps the best suggestion for this time of year is John Harvard’s Oktoberfest, an amber malty lager with a hint of aromatic hops. You’ll definitely want to stop by and grab a cold one!
