Stuart’s career spanned over seventy years, including two Shirley Temple films, various B movies, and a thirty year retirement between the 1940s and the 1970s. In 1982 she appeared in the Peter O’Toole film My Favorite Year. Her work after this was generally relegated to small television and film roles, until in 1998 she played the part of Old Rose in Titanic. This role earned Stuart an Academy Award nomination, making her the oldest person ever to be Oscar nominated for acting.

Stuart’s daughter Sylvia Thompson announced earlier today that her mother died of respiratory failure. She had previously overcome breast cancer, and had more recently been diagnosed with lung cancer.
