Labor Day 2010: Labor Day Events on Long Island

by Kaitlyn Piccoli on September 6, 2010

Another Long Island Summer may be coming to a close, but don’t break out the turtlenecks just yet: we still have Labor Day, our excuse for one last official summer party. Forget about Hurricane Earl–lets make this one count. Here are some of the best ways to give Summer a proper send-off:

  • Labor Day Monday Party @ The Boardy Barn This venerable Hamptons institution is synonymous with lots of cold beer and very little clothing. Come on down for one last romp. 270 West Montauk Hwy., Hampton Bays. 631-728-9733. www.boardybarn.com. 4-8 p.m.
  • Seaford Fall Festival @ Seaford Train Station OK, we know anything with the word “fall” in it sounds like a bummer right now, but this all-day event celebrates some of the best family entertainment on the Island, including handmade crafts and great food. Sunrise Highway, Seaford. 11 a.m.- 6 p.m.
  • Long Island Ducks vs. Bridgeport Bluefish @ Long Island Ducks Stadium Nothing says Summer like baseball, so why not end it up in the stands rooting our home team? The post-game fireworks display will ensure the season ends with a bang. 3 Court House Dr., Central Islip. 631-940-3825. www.liducks.com. 6:35 p.m.
  • Children’s Hands-On Milling Workshop @ The Stony Brook Grist Mill Since its Labor day and all, why not teach your kids about labor by making them actually do some? Its something they don’t get enough of these days. 100 Harbor Rd., Stony Brook. 631-751-2244. www.3villagecsd.k12.ny.us/Elementary/minnesauke/3villagehist/StonyBrookGristMill.htm. Noon -4:30 p.m.
  • 64th Annual Shinnecock Powwow @ Shinnecock Indian Reservation Celebrate Mother Earth (she’s been good to us this summer) and the incoming harvest and the annual powwow. Come rain or shine, Long Island’s Shinnecock Nation will be reveling with live music and dancing, a fire lighting at sunset, and great food. West Gate Road, Southampton. 631-283-6143. www.shinnecocknation.com. 10 a.m.

Labor Day History: What Is Labor Day?

by Pilot Brown on September 6, 2010
Be honest: The main reason you care about Labor Day is it’s a guaranteed three-day weekend right as summer is winding down. And that’s OK. No harm, no foul (unless you’re planning on wearing white any time after today, in which case, [...]

Wedding & Event FAQ
Q- Does the flower girl have to wear white or ivory to match the bride?

A-Your flower girl can wear any colored dress, which of course coordinates with the rest of your wedding party. If you choose for her to wear white or ivory, you can accent the dress with the bridal party color sash or appliqué. She can also wear the color of the bridal party and to differentiate her, you can add a white or ivory sash. Choose something that you feel will coordinate best with the rest of your bridal party.
