by Long Island Press on September 4, 2010

A man pushing a shopping cart was fatally struck by a car in Hauppauge early Saturday morning.

Daniel Ingham, a 24-year-old resident of Halesite, was driving a Ford Fusion northbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when he hit a man pushing a shopping cart along the side of the road at 1:05 a.m., according to Suffolk County police. Ingham pulled over and called the police.

The victim was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

The man was collecting cans and had just left his place of work when he was hit, police said. His identity has not yet been released while his family is notified.

Ingham’s vehicle has been taken in for a safety check and an investigation is still ongoing.

Fourth Squad detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or may have seen a man pushing a shopping cart along Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge, to call them at (631) 854-8452.
