Pens, for the most part, are not recyclable. But Paper Mate has come up with a solution.
Pens made from corn-based plastic. Pens that biodegrade. Pens that you can compost.
The biodegradable pens and mechanical pencils, sold at Staples, Office Max Office Depot and most other office supply stores on Long Island, even Kmart are intended to be buried in soil or your home compost bin and they will biodegrade in about a year.
Of course, the pen needs to be disassembled before burial, since the ink cartridge and metal spring are not biodegradable. But, hey, it’s a step in the right direction. And, for those of us who like to write in purple ink, these bad boys don’t just come in black and blue, so pick your poison.
A Paper Mate biodegradable pen sells, on average, for about $2 per pen. They are refillable.
