An offshore Town of Hempstead oyster and clam hatchery is hoping its work will help revitalize the South Shore bays.
The wind and solar-powered facility raises and releases about 6 million of the baby shellfish, which naturally clean the water.
“The filtration that’s provided is very, very important,” said Ronald Masters, commissioner of the Department of Conservation.
The goal is to replenish the stock and bring them back to what they once were. “If we can put that many more out there, it’s always a good feeling,” said Thomas Landi, a project manager with the department.
