Google is commemorating the 71st anniversary of the musical classic The Wizard of Oz with a special logo featured on the search engines homepage today.
Google’s Doodle shows Dorothy and her fellow friends, Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and Toto the dog traveling along the yellow brick road toward Emerald City.
The film, which was based off the children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, had it’s Hollywood premiere on Aug. 15, 1939.The musical however was first debuted 3 days prior on Aug. 12 at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wis. It starred Judy Garland who played Dorothy Gale, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley.
In 1939, the film, directed by Victor Fleming, was nominated for a number of Academy Awards. It was beat out by Gone with the Wind for Best Picture, however the song Over the Rainbow won for Best Song.
Google Doodles have been around since 1999 and have been created to celebrate holidays, famous birthday’s, Earth Day, the Olympic games and more.
