A Commack High School assistant boys track coach was arrested Tuesday morning for sexually abusing a 15-year-old female student, Suffolk police said.
A Commack High School student reported to school staff that 26-year-old Bryan Tornee of Commack took the victim to a motel in Deer Park where he sexually abused her last month, according to Special Victims Section detectives.
Tornee, who is also a part-time janitor at Commack High School, surrendered to police at the Seventh Precinct at 9 a.m. He was charged with criminal sex act, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.
“We’re as shocked as anyone,” said Dr. James Feltman, superintendent of Commack Schools, who said the school was alerted to the allegations from the victim’s friend. “We immediately suspended the employee, banned him from school premises and called the police.”
Tornee, who is not a teacher, has been an employee at the Commack school since 2006, Feltman said. “The police asked us to keep this matter to ourselves because the employee was apparently out of town,” he added.
Tornee is also a part-time teacher’s assistant at the Locust Valley Central School District. Locust Valley school officials said in a statement that Tornee “has been relieved of his responsibilities pending the conclusion of these investigations” and added that he has been employed with the district for five months.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Special Victims Section at 631-852-6184.
