A Republican official says former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to endorse ex-GOP congressman Rick Lazio for New York governor.

The decision is confirmed by a Republican familiar with Giuliani’s plan who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The official isn’t authorized to speak about the endorsement.

Giuliani is known as America’s mayor for his leadership after the Sept. 11 attacks. His endorsement is scheduled for Tuesday.

Giuliani spokeswoman Maria Comella hasn’t responded to a request for comment.

Lazio is a former congressman from Long Island. He announced his candidacy months ago and has been campaigning since.

Democratic Gov. David Paterson is seeking a full term in 2010. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is believed to be weighing what would be his second run at the job.
