Long Island Turkeys In Hunter’s Sights

Then head out to Long Island this fall for Suffolk County’s first-ever wild turkey hunting season — taking place just in time for Thanksgiving.

State officials say they’ll allow hunters to take one bird apiece with either a bow and arrow or shotgun.

They say there are about 3,000 of the gobblers living in Suffolk County.

Local lifelong hunter Mark Wroobel says he thinks it’s a “great idea” to have a turkey hunt in the area. He says hunters used to have to go upstate to shoot the birds.

Department of Environmental Conservation spokeswoman Aphrodite Montalvo says the agency decided to allow the hunt because there was such a large number of turkeys in the county.
