French Scientists: Insect Repellent Not Safe

by Long Island Press on August 9, 2009

New French research suggests DEET, the main ingredient used in many insect repellants, may affect the central nervous system.

Researchers Vincent Corbel an Bruno Lapied are calling for safer alternatives after investigating the toxicity of the chemical on rodents. The researchers also found that when used in combination with other insecticides, such as organophosphate and carbamate insecticides, its toxicity increases.

Although the authors, who published the study in BMC Biology, warn of potential dangers to humans, they also acknowledge the need for more studies.

Other experts say it is more of a risk to come in contact with mosquitoes than it is to use insect repellents. To read the full study click here.
