Not many people can say that their childhood interests have shaped their careers. Peter Gong can. He has been managing comic book stores for years, and loving everything the experience has to offer him.

Peter is starting his third year managing Phoenix Comics & Collectibles. He has more than 20 years experience managing other comic book stores. He knows his craft, and for those who are familiar, it is a serious artistic pursuit.

When did your love for comics begin?
I myself have been a genre fan since I was little. [I’ve been] reading and collecting comics, watching sci-fi and anime.  It’s a really nice feeling to know that the things I’ve always loved in my life have now become hip by today’s standard.

How is the shopping experience at Phoenix Comics & Collectibles different than other competing stores?
In my store, a customer can feel at home in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.  A new perspective on things is always welcome, unlike some other stores known to be stuffy and purely business-minded.

What are your goals for Phoenix Comics & Collectibles?
My goal is not to be the No. 1 comic store in America, but the No. 1 comic store everyone remembers! My motto is:  Make sure the customer leaves with a smile.

Have any writers visited your store?
One time I serviced Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy).  Otherwise, most of my customers are celebrities in their own rights.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about Long Island?
The best thing about Long Island is the diversity of people I meet.  I love the events throughout the year which are all within driving distance.  I love the little towns out in Suffolk and northern Nassau County. Both the Hamptons and Fire Island have their appeals. I’ve lived here all my life, and been teased for my accent, but I’m proud that I have one.

What is your favorite type of music?
My music tastes are truly eclectic.  Crooners like Dean Martin and Bobby Darin swing!  The Beatles, The Who, and Queen rock!  Huey Lewis, Peter Gabriel, Cheap Trick are hip!  John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Randy Edelman are gold!

How can comic book fans contact you?
I have my store listed on various sites. I can be contacted directly via phoenixcomicsli@aol.com. I can be found through the Diamond Comic Shop Locator, phone book, MySpace, etc.

Wedding & Event FAQ
Q- Does the flower girl have to wear white or ivory to match the bride?

A-Your flower girl can wear any colored dress, which of course coordinates with the rest of your wedding party. If you choose for her to wear white or ivory, you can accent the dress with the bridal party color sash or appliqué. She can also wear the color of the bridal party and to differentiate her, you can add a white or ivory sash. Choose something that you feel will coordinate best with the rest of your bridal party.
