Suffolk County police arrested a Brookhaven man Saturday in Selden for possessing a gun that had been stolen during a 2005 larceny.
According to Suffolk police, Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers Chris Standard and Michael Repperger were on patrol in a Selden shopping center on Route 25 targeting shoplifters and the theft of items from parked vehicles when they observed Frank Smith, 27, discarding trash onto the parking lot pavement.
During an interview of Smith, who resides on South Country Road in Brookhaven, the officers noticed he possessed “an unusually large number of various types of marking pens,” police said, which he admitted to stealing.
Further investigation discovered Smith was in possession of a loaded handgun stolen during a 2005 larceny.
Smith was charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 4th and 5th Degree Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, and Possession of Graffiti Instruments. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Jan. 24.
