For students seeking a personalized education on a campus alive with intellectual thought and artistic expression, The College of Saint Rose in the heart of New York’s capital city may be just the right fit. The campus is an urban mix of 80 modern and historic buildings integrated into the community and within walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants, museums and the state capital.
For all its small-school ambiance, the educational offerings at Saint Rose have the depth and breadth of a mid-sized university. The College offers 63 undergraduate and 45 graduate programs ranging from nationally prominent majors in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Graphic Design to new majors in Geology and Bioinformatics—the melding of biology and information technology in medical research.
With a 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio and an average class size of 20, the faculty’s first priority is teaching and mentoring students. Students have co-published and presented at national conferences in the sciences, psychology, English literature, history and education.
Saint Rose is proud to be the largest educator of teachers in New York State. According to the most recent data from the NYS Education Department, Saint Rose had more students complete teacher preparation programs than any college in the state, with 96 percent of students passing their certification exams. The School of Arts and Humanities now has the largest enrollment on the undergraduate level and sponsors national-level art exhibits, music concerts and a visiting writers series.
The College’s commitment to the arts is evident in the construction of the new Massry Center for the Arts. This 32,000-square-foot building offers the 400-seat Picotte Recital Hall, multiple rehearsal spaces, the Esther Massry Gallery, art history classrooms and music labs. Now under construction and slated for completion in January 2010, the Center for Communications and Interactive Media will feature a state-of-the-art television studio, Internet radio station, newspaper production lab, music studio with recording lab, video projection room and multimedia computer labs.
At Saint Rose, the total cost (including tuition, fees, room and board) is one of the lowest of any private college in the Northeast, while offering the kind of powerful academic programs and talented faculty found in colleges and universities double or even triple the cost. The College is dedicating more than $24 million this year out of its operating fund to scholarships and grants, resulting in 98 percent of students receiving financial aid.
The tagline of the College—Passion. Knowledge. Purpose.—could be used to describe the students who thrive there. Students have a dedication to community and approach life with a sense of purpose. They are passionate about becoming knowledgeable in their fields and defining their values so that they can develop the careers and lives they want.
Everything starts with the desire to be more than you are today. A Saint Rose education instills students with the passion, knowledge, and purpose, not only to do great things—but extraordinary things.
